The Transport Ministry has announced extensive plans to overhaul more than 160 kilometres of what is often considered to be the country’s worst highway: the highly-used D1 thoroughfare from Prague to Brno. For years the D1 has been plagued by aging surfaces, damaged sections, and complicated reconstruction – often a nightmare for drivers. But, transport officials hope, that could soon change.

Laura Baranik is one of the Czech Republic’s best known restaurant reviewers, writing a regular column in the Saturday edition of the newspaper Lidové noviny, as well as running her own blog, The Prague Spoon. Welcome to this week’s SoundCzech, which this week sounds less Czech and more German. This time we are going to be looking at German words that are commonly used in Czech, and to introduce a popular example, I’ve chosen the song “Ksicht” by the well-known ska band Sto zvířat (“100 Animals”).
